Flashback Friday goes to Camp!

It's Flashback Photo Friday where we look at our pre-digital photos at Alicia's,  My favorite meme of the week.  I figured since it's camp season...we'd go to camp.

Several college summers, 1987, 1988 and 1989 I packed up from the cool breezes of dorm life...and head to the desert mountains...Good bye UCSB and hello camp! I worked as an art and crafts counselor for the Boys and Girls club in the San Jacinto Mountains. During the day the counselors would rotate the kids to various classes.  Since my class was in the shade...I always ended up with a big class.  Sometimes shade didn't help when it was 100 degrees plus.  We could always count on rain...every afternoon like clock work!...  That's me the brown spot with the mop of braids...(you really have to click on the photos to do them justice.)

Each week we'd get new campers we'd love on Monday and be glad to see go home on Friday! The above photo is my friend Lori (who they called "Nature Lori") and me...."Art Lorrie" (my job and my name...all summer...I answered to "Art Lorrie". We spent many off days either playing and hanging with the kids...or avoiding them and hiding out in her car.

Some campers came several weeks in a row.  The kids above are from Palm Desert, California and Henderson, Nevada...wonder what they're up to now...

We had this little girl (can you image 7 years old) for several weeks in a row.  I wish I remembered her name.  Since her counselor claimed she couldn't do her hair...guess who had to do her hair everyday?  Since I ended up doing so many heads...we had 10 girls who had the same style...two ponetails...period!

By the end of the summer in August...we were pretty much slap happy.  My roomate was the girl with riding hat on next to the kayak...she was the horse wrangler...so I got to ride horses everyday. The guy with the bow next to me was from Australia...and we spent many nights talking about the bible...I often wonder if he's saved.

Good times!

Awesome memory, Lorrie!! Wow...wouldn't it be neat to find some of these kids or even your friends to see what they are up to now?

And awwwwwww about the 7 year old girl who was there for weeks!!

I was laughing though when you said you couldn't wait for them to go home on Friday..LOL!!!! It does take a toll on you to watch kids for an entire week, if not more!!

I can't imagine sending my 7 year old away for so many weeks, but she sure looks like she was enjoying herself!

ooops, forgot to say thank you. I don't know how I managed to put the wrong link in there. You'd think I'd know how to do it right by now!

What awesome memories...I must admit I like the last picture the best. Truly though, I think it is amazing you could tear yourself away from Santa Barbara at all! And you're right, I could never send my 7 year old away...I'd die!

That would be so cool, and such an adventure! I bet you got attached to some of those kids, and like you said...wouldn't wait to see the others go on their way. Great memories.

I have to say 7 is too young. This poor girl and her sister...I never knew their situation at home...but they cried every night before "going home" day. Even now...I'm thinking they were neglected by very rich parents since some kids came from poverty and were mixed with the rich kids...I remember their dad played professional "ball" but I never knew which one...I really loved all the kids...but I ended up at a Christian camp after this one...and the difference was awesome...I just really grew as a Christian ministering to the kids. God has a way of bringing things full circle...my current pastor was a camp pastor at that camp the second year I worked there...small world.
