Taming the tongue Tuesday!

Have you noticed in cartoons lately...
the word
"stupid" is used more and more often.

Now in my household. It's forbidden.
Stupid and Shut up are "s" words...
(so is the real "s" word...but we haven't come to that hurdle yet)

"Mom" he said "Stupid.."

"Hey Stupid...get out of my room!"

It's endless.

Well I don't go around telling them "stupid" this and that.
My husband doesn't either.

Where do the boys get it from?

Plain and simple.
The cartoons.

As much as I try to say they aren't picking up unwanted words...they are.

Luke 6: 45
The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of the heart his mouth speaks.

When we ride the PBS wave and we watch old cartoons and shows...
"stupid" seems to disappear from their vocabulary.

When I slip and don't enforce channels like I should (i.e. Nickt@@ns)
then "stupid" sneaks back in their conversations.

The same goes with us big folks.
What words are coming out of your mouth that shock you.
They are a product of who you hang with...
what you read...
what you scan on the Internet...
and what you listen to on the TV.

Before I get "freaked" out because my 5 year old said "stupid"
I better check what going into his heart and mind...
(ok I'm still going to "freak out" but maybe I'll correct him a little gentler)

and the same goes for myself.

The above verse says it all..."for out of the overflow of his heart...
his mouth speaks."

You know...you just made me feel so much better! Our oldest is 14 and still, to this day, she won't say "stupid" in reference to anyone as she believes it the ultimate evil description...and she won't tell anyone to "shut up" as there are more intelligent ways to ask someone to stop talking. All five of our kids will say "oooooo!!! She said the "s" woooooooord" when it does get said...not just because of our training (altho am sure that plays into it) but because they are old enough to think for themselves, rather than "conform to the patterns of this world".

Glad to know I am not alone in this "s" word teaching!

You are a beautiful mom!

You are absolutely right, things shown on television are a high influence on children, when they see it they think it's okay. I watch all movies before letting my kids watch them to ensure it is something suitable for them.

Great post.

Blessings to you for the week,

Hugs,

I was surprised to realize that the "old shows" are not a good example in this area either. The Brady kids called each other stupid, dumb head, etc, almost every episode, and I've heard it on the Waltons and Little House on the Prairie too.

Yah, my kids get all freaked out when they hear the word "stupid" or "shut up." I'm so glad they are not desensitized to those words!!!

Ha ha...my kids don't watch Brady's, Waltons and Little House...it's pretty much Andy Griffin and Star Trek (the original)
