Taming the tongue Tuesday!

potshot noun

/ˈpɒt.ʃɒt/US pronunciation symbol/ˈpɑːt.ʃɑːt/ [C]
(UK also
pot
)
a shot which is fired carelessly or with little preparation
He was taking potshots at neighbourhood cats.
a criticism

Well today Taming the Tongue doesn't have a bible verse to it. I can't think of one off the top of my head...but I did find the definition for...
pot shots!

Like you don't know what that is...
We've all seen it, done it, continue to do it.

You have a bit of information and instead of keeping it to yourself...
you find a way of "carelessly throwing" it somebody's way.

You know your friend is having problems with her mother-in-law...
and you HAPPEN to mention that you and your mother-in-law have been hanging out and shopping.

A friend of yours sees you haven't been getting sleep...
and she HAPPENS to mention how great her nights have been.

These are silly little examples...
but pot shots exist none the less.

Believe it or not...I have a friend who NEVER....
I mean NEVER takes potshots at others...
she never has at me...
and she never has at others...

I'm sorry to report...she isn't a believer (well her life doesn't show it...I'm still hoping.)

But the rest of the folks I know that are believers....
I couldn't think of someone who doesn't throw out
a pot shot here and there..

Folks let's not be in the business of carelessly throwing out our words...just to stick it to someone else.

Now I know some of you are naturally bent towards that...well just
WORK
ON
IT
through prayer and watching that tongue.
That's what I'm planning on doing...
and you do the same.

Hey...Let's use Ephesians 4:29 (ESV)...
We probably all know it...
but in case you don't...here it is...

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

Blessings!

I know I tossed one out yesterday. I had to repent of not only the pot-shot but also the attitude behind it.

Um...wasn't pointing out for us all that she "isn't a believer" a pot-shot?

Before I was saved I used to just blurt out what I thought. But, I'm so glad that He has made me think before words come out of my mouth. Now, I may not always hold back, but at least I have conviction about it (as opposed to before).

Erin...Yes...it's a reverse pot shot towards us Christians...not towards my friend. (who I'm still hoping will get saved one day)

You know what, Lorrie? I do this with out realizing it. My hubby has to tell me I am doing it. He later will say ... "You know you said such and such and that person has a problem and you just rubbed it in." and I will be like.. "oh no, I didn´t even realize it." I pray the Lord my tongue to keep!

Thanks for this post! As a pastor´s wife I need to be so careful of my words and I am not enough.
