Well it's Friday and it's time for More Than Words
Friday Photo Flashback...it's a great meme that Alicia has.

Well this time of the year when I was young....
our household would be brimming with activity.

We'd be putting together our bags and coolers
and heading east...
or actually...south that is...

where the weather was HOT and the air SAT on the back of our necks.
It only took about a week before we had our "southern accents".

(my sister, 2 little cousins, and myself ...I think we were 8 and 9)

We didn't care...
to have the freedom to roam
Big Mama's farm and play in the woods...
eat raspberries and blackberries...right off the vine...
mess with the animals and eat a mess of greens...

we loved it!

Oh sure we complained about only having 3 tv stations instead of 12...but
as soon as we turned down that long road...
we knew we were at our father's childhood home...
and it always seemed home to us too!

And we never got a chance to watch tv...it was in the parlor...and kids weren't allowed at
Big Mama's house in the parlor.

With 50 first cousins...you always had someone else to blame your mess on too!
(My dad was one of 12 surviving children).
We were NOT to go in the old barn (in the picture below...but it was the best place to be!)

from left to right...a cousin, my sister
on Poppy (my grandfather's shetlend pony), my brother,
another cousin, my fav. girl cousin when I was little,
and me cheesing with a roller in my hair! - Note that even in
the "country" my mother had my sister and I matching...hilarious!

I can almost smell the humidity and rain all rolled
into one as we drive up
the rock gravel road.

Good times.

Lorrie..just by reading this, I can tell you had such fond memories! It reminds me of when we used to visit my grandparents in Virginia!!

Aren't cousins the best? I remember spending time w/ mine when we were little. It's sad though that it didn't remain that way because we didn't live in the same state.

Anyway...thank you for sharing those memories! Isn't it neat how so many memories come back just by one picture???

Gosh...I forgot to mention that by the end of the summer our friends back home would always comment we turned 5 shades darker...everyday was in the sun...just fun!

WOW great pictures and fabulous memories. The way you described it, together with the pictures, I could imagine being there. You could probably write some amazing children's adventure stories based on your holidays.

Thanks for sharing, and thank you for your kind comment on my blog.

Have a lovely weekend.

So where is south? I think it was you who commented on my blog last week that you had never been to NC. This post makes me think of my childhood. The humidity, mess of greens, berries on the vine, few tv stations....thank you so much for sharing.

What memories you have! We went to my dad's childhood summer cabin once when I was growing up and it was such a powerful experience that I still remember it. To have gone every year? What an amazing privilege. I love the way you remember so much that you make it come alive for us. Thanks for sharing such cool memories.

Great pictures! My brothers and I loved visiting my dad's family farm as well. We were lucky enough that the farm was in Wisconsin, unfortunately we lived in AZ lol. We loved escaping the heat for the few weeks we were there each summer.
