A Rock in the Sun

-Haitian proverb
A rock in the water does not know the pain of a rock in the sun.

There I was last night reading about how people in Haiti live such a hard life.  I was so convicted sitting in my comfortable home, drinking tea and watching my kids play.  Here in America we always are complaining, grumbling about small things...why we need a new washing machine, why we have to go to the laundry mat to wash clothes, why we need more clothes.  We want clothes not from the X Store but from Y.  We want our clothes new.  Our shoes don't match.  So we buy more shoes.  The list goes on and on...and that's only about clothes.

We do the same with food.  Ditto with shelter.  The basics.  We have so much in abundance while there are parts of the world...in this hemisphere where the basics are a struggle.  Every part of survival is painful.  While we relax and let the cool stream of abundance flow over us...there are folks in Haiti, Tennessee, right around you...trying to make it in life...but it's painful and they live their lives in the hot and dry sun...everyday...a continual painful struggle.

Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have; for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (Hebrews 13:5)

A rock in the water does not know the pain of a rock in the sun.
